Dick Groat, an All-American baseball and basketball player, is a legendary athlete who finished his college career at Duke by making history. He played in the NBA for the Fort Wayne Pistons and was a prolific baseball player, winning the NL MVP and batting title in 1960. He went on to win two World Series while playing for the Pirates in 1960 and the Cardinals in 1964. Dick is the only person elected into both the college baseball and basketball halls of fame. Duke retired his #10 basketball jersey, making him the first player in Duke history to receive this honor. After retiring from sports, Dick built the Champion Lakes Golf Course and has continued to manage it until his passing. He has always been willing to support any charity effort or Dukes’, Pirates’, or Cardinals’ request for assistance.
